Swimming Pool Complex

The project is for College Rifles Rugby Club, a hundred and fifteen year old hub of community activity for the Easter bays of Auckland. The project was to ensure that the recreation and sport facilities catered to the needs of the growing population. Actively engaging in the synergies and programming of the context, we were to design a swimming pool complex that addresses the issues of theory, architectonics, performance and pragmatic project requirements.

"Conceptualisation is the inception, development and projection of the ecology of relationships, which define the architectural project. Conceputalisation occurs in the space of representation, that is, in the conceptual space between the building and its representation”. (Evans, 1997, p.154)

The processes, media and personal explorations in representational practices such as drawing, diagramming and modeling engage the designer in the space between the building and its repre- sentation. Revit was used for modelling and presenting this project.

The complex’s design focusses on heightening the sensitivity of one’s experience via the materiality and light conditions. The simplicity in form compliments the textural qualities of the building's spatial experience, the interior aspires to create a dramatic aura – a cavernous and theatrical atmosphere and yet, maintaining a sense of comfort and a serene ambience. Continuing to explore the tension between generative media operations and its contextual performance, the design aspires to identify and respond to the surrounding environment and circumstances.
